My theory is that the comics of the Walking Dead is just kind of like a written record of events that already happened, and that the show is what actually happened. I'll explain:
The show takes place before the comics are written, and is what actually was going on in that universe. It records all events following Rick Grimes and his group to a 100% accuracy, and includes everyone involved.
The comics are like a history book, written years after the events of the show's final episode, by someone not really involved with it. The stories of the group were passed down by word of mouth, and a historian writes down how people passed down the stories of Rick and his group. They are not entirely accurate, as historical records rarely are, but get the general gist. Many dead people are left out of these written records, like Daryl and Merle amongst the most popular. These people and events relating to them are forgotten.
However, this means that both take place in the same universe and accounts for inconsistency within the comics and show. That's my theory. Thank you for reading.
